About the University of Utah: Utah's Flagship Research University

Our History

Founded on February 28, 1850, as the University of Deseret by the General Assembly of the provisional State of Deseret, the University of Utah is the state's oldest institution of higher education. The university received its current name in 1892 and moved to its present location in 1900.

From its humble beginnings in a private home to its current status as a top-tier research institution, the U has grown alongside the Salt Lake Valley while maintaining its commitment to academic excellence and community service.
